Chendamangalam lies in the north of Ernakulam district, close to North Paravur, where the Periyar and Chalakudy rivers approach each other and split into several channels before reaching the backwaters. From above, the land is broken into pieces by water: houses and roads sit on narrow strips between river branches, and a handful of bridges tie the settlement together.
The village is part of the Muziris Heritage Project, which links sites associated with the ancient port region. Within a small area it holds the Paliam Palace of the Paliath Achans, hereditary prime ministers to the rulers of Kochi, a historic synagogue, churches and temples, reflecting a long coexistence of communities. Chendamangalam is also known for its handloom weaving, a craft that drew wide attention after the floods of 2018.
A Chendamangalam map poster is shaped by water more than roads. The river channels appear as broad, curving bands, the settled land as fine threads of lanes between them, and the bridges as short crossings that connect the pieces. The result is an intricate composition, almost like a drawing of a delta, that looks nothing like a gridded town.
Branches of the Periyar and Chalakudy rivers wrap around the village, dividing the land into islands and peninsulas that give the map its fragmented, watery shape.
The Paliam Palace, the synagogue and nearby places of worship sit within walking distance of each other, marked on the map by a cluster of small lanes.
Short bridges link the pieces of land across the channels, and the roads that use them are the few continuous routes through an otherwise divided settlement.

Ko e ha Chendamangalam
Chendamangalam draws people interested in Kerala's layered past and those with family roots here. A map of its rivers and lanes makes a meaningful gift, and after the floods of 2018 it also reads as a quiet tribute to a community that rebuilt.
