Ko e mape
Chunār lies in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh, on the southern bank of the Ganges between Mirzapur and Varanasi. The town is dominated by Chunar Fort, which stands on a rocky outcrop right at the water's edge. From above, the river makes a broad curve past the fort, and the town spreads inland from it in a web of narrow lanes, markets and older neighbourhoods.
The fort has a long and layered history, held in turn by several rulers and later by the British, and its commanding position over the river made it strategically important for centuries. Chunār is also known for its sandstone. The fine-grained stone quarried in this area was used for the polished pillars erected by the emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE.
A Chunār map poster brings together the strong outline of the fort, the sweep of the Ganges and the tightly built old town behind them. Beyond the centre, fields, quarries and rural roads stretch toward the low hills to the south. In black and white, the wide river and the dense lanes form a striking contrast.
Set on a rocky spur above the river, the fort forms a compact, fortified shape that anchors the entire map and marks the heart of the town.
The river curves widely past the town, a broad, pale band that gives the composition its scale and a clear sense of movement.
Behind the riverfront, narrow lanes and closely packed houses create a dense, intricate pattern that contrasts with the open water and the fields beyond.
