Mau, also known as Mau Nath Bhanjan, lies in the east of Uttar Pradesh on the wide, flat plain of the Ganges basin and is the administrative centre of the district of the same name. The older parts of the city are made up of close-packed lanes that bend and branch irregularly. The pattern grew up gradually over many generations rather than following a plan.
The town is widely known for handloom and powerloom weaving, especially saris, and textile workshops are spread throughout its residential neighbourhoods. The trade does not show on a map, but it helps explain how dense the older quarters are, with homes, workshops and small markets sharing the same narrow streets. Newer areas along the main roads have a looser, more regular layout.
The Tamsa River winds past the city, and a railway junction connects Mau with other towns in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Beyond the built-up area, fields and villages stretch across the plain in every direction. A Mau map poster shows the contrast between the intricate street pattern at the centre and the open farmland around it.
Narrow, irregular streets fill the historic core and form a fine, intricate texture. It stands out sharply against the more open land beyond.
The river curves near the older neighbourhoods, adding a soft line of water to a map otherwise dominated by streets and fields.
Railway lines converge on Mau from several directions, drawing long straight tracks across the plain and linking the town to the wider region.
