Siwān is the headquarters of Siwān district in north-western Bihar, close to the border with Uttar Pradesh. The land here is part of the wide, flat Gangetic plain, and the town has grown organically, with lanes and roads spreading from an older centre toward the farmland. With no hills to shape it, its outline is set by the roads, the railway and the water.
The Daha, a modest river, winds through the town, and the railway through Siwān Junction cuts a straight path across the plan. The district is known as the birthplace of Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, who was born in the village of Ziradei. Beyond the town, fields, ponds and small villages form a fine, scattered pattern.
A Siwān map poster records the town as it actually looks, with a dense core, streets reaching out along the main roads and the curve of the Daha running through. Places like this rarely get a printed map of their own. That is exactly why one matters to people who come from here or have family ties to the district.
A small river curves through Siwān. It is drawn as a narrow winding line that breaks the street network into uneven sections and softens the town's outline.
The line through Siwān Junction crosses the town in one long, steady stroke, with streets and settlements gathering on both sides.
Around the town, the Gangetic plain is dotted with ponds and small villages. This scattered texture frames the denser urban centre.
