Gorakhpur lies in eastern Uttar Pradesh on the plains below the Himalayan foothills, not far from the Nepal border. The Rapti River curves along its western side, and Ramgarh Tal, a broad lake, spreads over a large area to the south-east of the centre. Between them, the old city forms a dense, irregular web of lanes, with newer districts extending along the main roads.
The city takes its name from Gorakhnath, the medieval yogi, and the Gorakhnath temple is its best-known landmark. Gorakhpur is also home to Gita Press, a long-established publisher of Hindu religious texts. Its railway station is known for one of the longest platforms in the world.
