Comăneşti lies in Bacău County, in the valley of the Trotuş River as it flows out of the Eastern Carpathians. The valley is narrow here, so the town is long rather than round. Its main roads and the railway follow the river, and the residential streets fill the flat ground and lower slopes on either side until the forest takes over.
The town has a long association with coal mining, which drove much of its twentieth-century growth. It is also home to the Ghica Palace, a former residence of the Ghica family set in a park. Across Romania, Comăneşti is known for its New Year bear dance, when groups in heavy bearskin costumes parade through the streets.
