Dalain Hob is the seat of Ejin Banner in the far west of Inner Mongolia, a sparsely populated area close to the Mongolian border. The town grew up on the lower course of the Ejin River, the stream known further upstream as the Hei He. It fans out into channels before it disappears into the desert. The water is the reason there is a town here.
From above, Dalain Hob is a compact, regular grid of wide streets set against a vast, empty background. Green bands of irrigated land and groves of desert poplar follow the river branches. In autumn, the poplars turn gold and draw visitors from across China. Further out lie gravel plains, dunes and the basins of the Juyan lakes.
A Dalain Hob map poster uses the contrast between a tidy street pattern and the open land around it. The river channels add fine, branching lines, and the rest of the sheet is mostly space. The result is minimal almost by nature, a portrait of a settlement defined by the water it depends on.
The river splits into several branches around the town, and these thin lines are what make the oasis possible in an otherwise dry landscape.
Dalain Hob's broad, regular streets form a neat rectangle of blocks. On the map it stands out sharply against the unstructured desert around it.
Groves of desert poplar follow the watercourses around the town. They are well known for their golden colour in autumn.

This map suits travellers who crossed the desert to see the autumn poplars, and anyone drawn to the idea of a town on the edge of emptiness. The large areas of blank paper are part of its appeal.
Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, which works especially well with the desert setting. Then add your own title and date. The HD files are $9, and printed posters come on matte paper.
