Dārāsuram lies just west of Kumbakonam in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, in the fertile Kaveri delta. Water shapes the map here. Rivers and irrigation channels branch across the landscape and divide it into paddy fields, and the town forms a compact cluster of streets among them that almost merges with Kumbakonam's outskirts.
At its heart is the Airavatesvara Temple, built by the Chola king Rajaraja II in the twelfth century. Together with the great temples at Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, it forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Living Chola Temples. On a map, the temple compound shows as a clear rectangular enclosure within the surrounding streets.
Dārāsuram is also known for silk weaving, carried on in homes and workshops across the town. A Dārāsuram map poster captures a place where monument, craft and farmland sit close together. The rectangle of the temple precinct stands out against the softer lines of the channels and fields that stretch across the delta.
The Airavatesvara Temple occupies a walled rectangular precinct that stands out sharply on the map, an ordered geometric form among the town's irregular streets.
Rivers and irrigation channels of the Kaveri delta run through and around the town. Their flowing lines divide the land into cultivated plots.
To the east, the town's streets connect with the outskirts of Kumbakonam, so a wider framing shows Dārāsuram as part of a larger landscape of temple towns.
