Dhangadhi sits on the level plain of the Terai in the far west of Nepal, only a short distance from the border with India. With no hills or major rivers running through the centre, the map is shaped almost entirely by roads: a few broad main axes, a network of straight connecting streets and a looser pattern of lanes that fade into farmland at the edges.
The city has grown quickly as the main commercial and administrative centre of Kailali District and one of the largest urban areas in Sudurpashchim. New neighbourhoods have spread across what were recently fields, so its outline is irregular and still changing. Further north, the first low ridges of the Chure hills mark the edge of the plain.
