Dhenkānāl lies in central Odisha, where the coastal plain begins to rise into low, wooded hills. The town spreads over gently uneven ground, with its streets bending to follow the terrain rather than a strict grid. To the south, the Brahmani River runs across the district, and ponds and tanks break up the fabric of the town itself.
Dhenkānāl was the seat of a former princely state, and the old palace on the hillside still overlooks the town. The district is also known for its forests and for the hill shrine of Kapilash, a pilgrimage site in the surrounding uplands.
