Donetsk spreads across the open steppe of eastern Ukraine, with the Kalmius River running north to south through the city. On a map, a chain of ponds and reservoirs follows the river, and long, straight avenues cross the centre. The urban area is large and loose, with districts separated by open land, rail lines and industrial sites.
The city grew in the nineteenth century around a metalworks founded by the Welsh industrialist John Hughes, and it was first known as Yuzovka after him. Coal mining shaped its growth, and the conical spoil heaps from the mines remain distinctive features of the surrounding landscape.
