El Retén is a municipality in the department of Magdalena, in northern Colombia's Caribbean region. It lies on a wide, flat plain between the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the vast wetlands of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta. The town is compact, with a simple street grid and farmland on all sides.
This part of Magdalena is known as the zona bananera, the banana-growing zone, and the land around the town is organised for agriculture. Straight farm roads, drainage channels and plantation blocks create a geometric pattern across the plain, which sits in contrast to the town's closely set streets.
