Elbeuf lies on the left bank of the Seine, south of Rouen, where the river bends in one of the broad meanders typical of its lower course. On the map the town is pressed between the water and the rising ground to the south, with streets running parallel to the river and bridges linking it to the opposite bank.
For centuries Elbeuf was one of the leading centres of the French wool cloth industry, and its brick factories, workers' housing and merchants' houses still give the town a strong industrial character.
