Embi, also known as Emba, is a town in Aktobe Region in western Kazakhstan. It grew up on the railway that crosses the steppe between Orenburg and Central Asia. On a map the line of the tracks is the main feature, and the town's streets form a rectangular grid laid out alongside it.
The Emba River flows through the region toward the Caspian lowlands, and the town takes its name from it. The river leaves a meandering line across otherwise flat country. Beyond the edge of town the steppe opens out almost without interruption. Only a few roads, tracks and field boundaries break up the wide, empty landscape.
