Gaozuo lies on the North China Plain in the north of Jiangsu province, in a landscape that is almost completely flat. On a map the town appears as a compact cluster of streets set within a wide geometric pattern of farmland, straight roads and drainage channels.
This part of Jiangsu is intensively farmed, and the fields form neat rectangles separated by canals and waterways that manage water across the plain. The town itself has a main street lined with shops and services and residential blocks spreading out from it.
