Suqian lies in the north of Jiangsu Province, in low, flat country between two large lakes. Luoma Lake lies to the north and Hongze Lake to the south. The Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the area, and the old course of the Yellow River also crosses it. The city is laid out on a generous grid of broad roads.
The city is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Xiang Yu, the general who fought for control of China after the fall of the Qin dynasty. It is also known for baijiu. The distilleries of Yanghe and Shuanggou lie within its territory. Much of the modern city has been built in recent decades, with wide streets and planned parks.
