Linyi lies in southern Shandong, on the Yi River. From above, the river is the most striking feature: wide, straightened and crossed by a series of long bridges. The city stretches along both banks, with riverside parks and roads following the water.
The older centre sits on the west bank, with newer districts built to the east and north. Linyi is known as a major trading and logistics hub, with large wholesale markets and warehouse districts. On the map these appear as broad blocks connected by wide avenues.
