Ko e mape
Giảng Võ is an inner-city ward of Hanoi, in the Ba Đình area west of the historic citadel. Its name recalls a military training ground from the era of the Vietnamese dynasties, but the modern neighbourhood is residential and civic. It is a dense arrangement of streets, apartment blocks and small lakes, within walking distance of the city's government quarter.
Giảng Võ Lake is the most recognisable shape on the map, a calm body of water ringed by streets, and other lakes lie close by in neighbouring wards. Around it stand collective housing estates built in the second half of the twentieth century. Their parallel blocks and shared courtyards give the street pattern a very particular rhythm.
A Giảng Võ map poster frames a slice of Hanoi that most visitors pass through without noticing, though it holds much of the city's everyday life: exercise around the lake in the early morning, small cafés at the foot of the apartment blocks, and busy avenues leading to the centre. In black and white, the lakes and courtyards become strong, simple shapes.
The lake forms a clear, rounded void at the heart of the ward, circled by a ring of streets and paths that frames the water on the poster.
Twentieth-century apartment estates appear as rows of parallel blocks with shared courtyards, a regular pattern that stands out against the older, more irregular streets nearby.
Broad roads lead east toward the citadel and Ba Đình Square, their straight lines contrasting with the narrow lanes inside the residential blocks.
