Gokarna lies on the Arabian Sea coast of Karnataka, between the mouths of the Gangavali and Aghanashini rivers. The town is small and compact. Its streets run between the temple precinct and the main beach, a straight strip of sand facing west. Seen from above, the dense old core stops abruptly at the sand. Past it, the coastline turns wild and irregular.
South of town, the coast breaks into a series of coves divided by laterite headlands. The best known are Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches. Om Beach is named for its double curve, which looks a little like the written symbol. On a map these coves form a row of arcs cut into dark, wooded hills, joined only by footpaths and a few roads.
Gokarna is one of the major Shiva pilgrimage sites in southern India. It is known for the Mahabaleshwar temple, which tradition links to the Atmalinga legend. A Gokarna map poster holds both sides of the place together: a traditional temple town with its narrow streets, and a coastline that draws travellers looking for quiet beaches. The two sit only a short walk apart.
Two linked bays meet at a small rocky point, forming the rounded double curve that gave the beach its name. It is clearly readable even at small print sizes.
Tight streets gather around the Mahabaleshwar temple and lead down to the main beach, a dense grid that contrasts with the open coast beside it.
The Gangavali estuary to the north and the Aghanashini to the south frame the town, placing Gokarna on a strip of coast between two broad bodies of water.

Ko e ha Gokarna
Many people pass through Gokarna for pilgrimage or for slow weeks on its beaches, and the coastline stays with them. A framed map brings back the walk over the headlands from one cove to the next.
Add the dates of a trip or the name of your favourite beach to the title and subtitle, and set the coordinates line to a precise spot. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
