Guáimaro is in the east of Camagüey province, on the flat to gently rolling grassland that covers much of central Cuba. From above, the town is a neat grid of streets. The blocks are close to square and follow the colonial town plan, then thin out into fields, pastures and scattered farm buildings at the edges.
The Carretera Central, Cuba's long east–west highway, crosses the town and gives the map a strong, straight axis. The streets are laid out around a central square, and the regular blocks next to it are the most orderly part of the drawing. Around the town, rural roads and field boundaries fill the paper with sparse, quiet lines.
Guáimaro has a place in Cuban national history. In 1869, during the war of independence, the Assembly of Guáimaro met here and adopted the first constitution of the Republic in Arms.
