Ko e mape
Gujranwala lies on the plains of Punjab, north of Lahore, on the historic Grand Trunk Road that has linked the cities of the subcontinent for centuries. On a map the road is the city's backbone, running straight through from southeast to northwest, and much of the urban area has grown along it in a long, dense band.
The land is flat, so there are no hills or major rivers to shape the plan. Instead, the old city forms a tight, irregular core near the centre, while newer housing schemes spread outward in more regular grids. Irrigation canals cut across the surrounding farmland, and the transition from city blocks to fields is clear on the map.
Gujranwala is known as the birthplace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who founded the Sikh Empire at the turn of the nineteenth century, and as an important industrial centre. It is also famous in Pakistan for its food and its tradition of wrestling. A Gujranwala map poster shows a city built by trade and industry along one of the region's oldest roads.
The historic highway runs straight through the city, forming its main spine and giving the map a strong diagonal line from one corner to the other.
Near the centre, older neighbourhoods form a dense cluster of narrow, irregular streets, visibly finer than the planned districts around them.
Around the edges, irrigation canals and farm plots break the pattern of streets, creating a quieter border that frames the built-up area.
