Gunan is the central urban area of Qijiang District, in the far south of Chongqing municipality near the border with Guizhou. Like much of the Chongqing region it is built on uneven ground. From above, the city follows the Qijiang River as it winds through a valley between wooded hills, with streets stepping along the banks and climbing the slopes.
Flat land is scarce here, so the street pattern follows the terrain rather than a planned grid. Dense blocks crowd the riverbanks, bridges tie the two sides together, and newer districts spread onto terraces and gentler slopes further out. At the edges, the map dissolves into farmland, forest and scattered villages typical of the southern Chongqing hills.
