Ha'il lies in north-central Saudi Arabia, in a basin framed by two granite mountain ranges, the Aja to the west and the Salma to the southeast. The city grew as an oasis and a stop on routes crossing the Arabian Peninsula, and it later became the seat of the Al Rashid emirate. Today its layout is dominated by long, wide avenues and large, regular blocks.
The surrounding region is known for its ancient rock art. The sites at Jubbah and Shuwaymis, both in Ha'il Region, are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their thousands of carved figures. Ha'il is also associated with Hatim al-Tai, the pre-Islamic poet whose generosity became proverbial across the Arab world.
