Hitchin is a market town in north Hertfordshire, on the small River Hiz. Its map has a clear historic centre, with the market square, St Mary's Church and older streets close to the river. Around this core, Victorian terraces and later residential estates spread out in all directions, and main roads lead toward Letchworth, Stevenage, Luton and Bedford.
East of the centre, the East Coast Main Line passes through Hitchin, and the line toward Cambridge branches off nearby, so the railways form a distinct shape on the map. St Mary's is one of the largest parish churches in Hertfordshire, and the town kept much of its old street pattern while growing around it. Green spaces along the Hiz soften the layout near the centre.
