Milton Keynes was designated a new town in 1967, and its layout is unlike any other in Britain. The city is organised around a grid of main roads, labelled H for horizontal and V for vertical, which meet at hundreds of roundabouts. Between them are self-contained grid squares, each a neighbourhood with its own curving streets. From above, the pattern looks like a slightly warped chessboard.
Green space runs through the whole plan. Balancing lakes such as Willen Lake, linear parks along the River Ouzel and the Grand Union Canal break the grid, and a network of shared paths called redways connects the neighbourhoods. The city is also known for its concrete cows sculpture, and Bletchley Park, the wartime codebreaking centre, lies within the borough.
A Milton Keynes map poster makes the logic of the plan visible at once. The long straight H and V roads, the dense rectangle of the central area and the organic streets inside each grid square create a composition that is both geometric and surprisingly soft. In black and white, the lakes and parks turn into pale shapes framed by the grid.
Main roads run in two directions across the city, meeting at roundabouts and dividing it into large squares that give the map its distinctive pattern.
The city centre is a long rectangle of boulevards and blocks, more formal and regular than the neighbourhoods surrounding it.
Willen Lake, the River Ouzel valley and the canal run through the plan, creating wide green corridors between the grid squares.

Ko e ha Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes is a favourite for architects, planners and anyone who grew up in one of its grid squares. The layout is so recognisable that the map works as a design object in its own right.
You can add a title, a subtitle such as your grid square or estate, and a coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit the room.
