Ilovays’k is in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, east of the city of Donetsk. It grew around the railway, and the junction still dominates the town plan. Wide bands of track, sidings and depot land run through the middle of the town, and the residential streets are arranged on either side in a regular grid of low houses and garden plots.
The surrounding land is open steppe and farmland, crossed by roads and rail lines heading toward other towns in the Donbas. The town became known internationally in 2014 because of the heavy fighting there during the war in eastern Ukraine.
