Jinshi is a county-level city in Changde, in the north of Hunan province. It lies on the Li River, one of the waterways that flows into the Dongting Lake basin, and the river is the strongest feature of its map. The urban area lines the water, with bridges tying the banks together.
Around the city, the land is mostly low and farmed, crossed by channels, ponds and rural roads typical of the lake plain. Within the town, main streets run parallel to and across the river, and newer districts have added wider roads and larger blocks at the edges.
