Kanchanaburi lies in western Thailand, about 130 kilometres from Bangkok. On a map, its shape comes from water. The Khwae Yai and Khwae Noi rivers join here to form the Mae Klong, and the town stretches along their banks in a long, narrow band. The streets run mostly parallel to the river, with shorter lanes leading down to the water.
The town is known around the world for the Bridge over the River Kwai, part of the Thailand–Burma Railway that Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers were forced to build during the Second World War. The railway line crosses the Khwae Yai north of the centre, and the large, carefully laid-out war cemetery sits close to the town.
Beyond the built-up area, the land turns to fields and forested hills that continue toward the Myanmar border. A Kanchanaburi map poster shows the meeting rivers, the railway line and the long riverside town in black and white, giving the place's history a quiet, precise form.
The Khwae Yai and Khwae Noi join at the southern end of town to form the Mae Klong. That broad Y-shaped junction is the strongest shape on the whole map.
The historic railway crosses the Khwae Yai on the Bridge over the River Kwai. On the map, the track is a thin straight line meeting the curving river.
The main roads follow the river's course, giving the town a long, linear form. Small lanes run down to the banks, where floating guesthouses and restaurants line the water.

Ko e ha Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi means different things to different people: a family history tied to the railway, a trip to the national parks upriver, or simply years spent living by the water. A map of the rivers and streets holds all of these without having to explain them.
