Kardítsa lies in the western part of the Thessalian plain in central Greece, one of the country's main farming regions. The town is almost completely flat. Its streets follow a largely regular grid, with long straight roads crossing at right angles and a central square where the main avenues meet. To the west, the plain rises toward the Agrafa mountains, which show as open space beyond the fields.
Because the ground is so level, Kardítsa has long been known as a cycling town, with bicycles used for everyday trips across the grid. Farming shapes the local economy, and nearby Lake Plastiras, a reservoir in the mountains to the west, draws visitors. In 2023 the plain around the town was severely flooded during Storm Daniel.
