Katoro is a town in Geita Region, north-western Tanzania, south of Lake Victoria. It has grown quickly as a trading centre, and from above it looks like it: a busy main road runs through the middle, with a dense cluster of streets and plots around it, then a looser pattern of lanes and tracks spreading out into farmland.
The Geita area is well known for gold mining, and it has drawn people from across Tanzania, which helps explain the rapid growth of towns like Katoro. The land around the town is gently rolling, with fields, scattered homes and footpaths making a fine web on the map, much less regular than the streets of the centre.
