Nā Pali Coast
Steep, fluted sea cliffs line the northwest shore and can be reached on foot by the Kalalau Trail or from the water. On the poster it is the one stretch of coast where the road simply ends.

Kauaʻi is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Its outline is almost circular, the eroded remains of a single great shield volcano. A highway runs most of the way around the coast but never closes the loop. Along the northwest shore the land drops away into the Nā Pali cliffs, and no road goes through.
At the centre rises Mount Waiʻaleʻale, one of the rainiest places on earth, and water drains from it in every direction. On the west side, the runoff has carved Waimea Canyon, long called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, with Kōkeʻe State Park above it. On a map the interior has almost no roads, only a wide open space crossed by rivers.
Līhuʻe, the county seat, sits on the east coast near the airport, and small towns line the shore from Hanalei Bay in the north to Waimea in the south. Captain James Cook first landed in the Hawaiian Islands at Waimea in 1778. A Kauaʻi map poster shows the island as it really is: a ring of towns around untouched high ground.

A deep canyon cut into the western side of the island. Its branching drainage lines are among the most intricate details on a map of Kauaʻi.
A wide, round bay on the north shore, backed by a river valley of taro fields. Its smooth arc is one of the cleanest curves in the island's coastline.

Ko e ha Kauaʻi
Kauaʻi is quieter than its neighbours, and people who love it tend to love it for exactly that. Its round shape, the unfinished coast road and the wild interior make an image that is both simple and specific, easy to recognise for anyone who has driven that highway.
