Molokaʻi stretches from west to east between Oʻahu and Maui, a long, narrow island formed by two volcanoes. The western end is dry, open and gently sloping, while the eastern end rises into wet, deeply cut mountains. The main highway follows the southern shore for much of its length, linking the island's small settlements.
Kaunakakai, the main town, lies on the south coast, with a long wharf reaching out over the shallow reef flat. Along the north shore the island drops away in sea cliffs that are among the highest in the world, and at their foot lies the flat Kalaupapa peninsula, isolated by the cliffs on one side and the sea on the others.
Kalaupapa was the site of a settlement where people with Hansen's disease were forcibly isolated from the nineteenth century onward, and where Father Damien worked and is remembered; it is now a national historical park. A Molokaʻi map poster shows the island's contrasts in a single view: the quiet southern road, the old Hawaiian fishponds along the south shore and the abrupt northern wall.
The northern coastline rises in an almost continuous wall of sea cliffs, a sharp edge on the map broken only by narrow valleys and the Kalaupapa peninsula.
A low, flat tongue of land extends from the foot of the cliffs into the ocean, cut off from the rest of the island and reached only by trail, air or sea.
The main town's long wharf runs straight out across the reef flat, one of the few sharp, human-made lines along the island's shallow southern coast.

Ko e ha Molokaʻi
Molokaʻi means home to a small, close community and a deep memory for many families in Hawaiʻi. Visitors remember it as the unhurried island, and a map of its long outline and quiet roads carries that tone well.
