Kavaklı lies in the western part of Istanbul province, far from the historic peninsula, on the stretch of the Thracian coast where the city gives way to smaller towns and farmland. It sits just inland from the Sea of Marmara, among gentle slopes that drain toward the shore, and feels a long way from the city's famous centre.
Like much of outer Istanbul, the area has grown quickly in recent decades. From above, that growth shows as parcels of regular streets and apartment blocks next to older, more irregular lanes and farm plots. The edges are still being filled in, so the map shows the point where town meets countryside.
