Kawagoe sits on the northern edge of the Musashino plateau in Saitama. The Iruma and Shingashi rivers and the broad Arakawa floodplain curve around its northern and eastern sides. On a map the old town appears as a dense cluster of narrow streets north of the modern station district. A long shopping street runs almost straight between the two.
Kawagoe is known as Little Edo for its kurazukuri, the heavy clay-walled merchant warehouses built after a great fire in 1893. They line the main street of the old quarter, near the wooden bell tower Toki no Kane, which still rings several times a day. Nearby, Kitain temple keeps rooms that were moved from Edo Castle.
The remains of Kawagoe Castle, including the Honmaru Goten palace hall, are a short walk east of the old streets. Today the city is both a Tokyo suburb and a destination in its own right, with Tobu, Seibu and JR lines bringing visitors every day. A Kawagoe map poster shows the tight grain of the historic centre against the rivers and the newer districts around it.
The main street of the warehouse district runs north through the old town. Its narrow, continuous line of buildings forms the spine of the historic quarter.
East of the old streets, the site of Kawagoe Castle shows up as a cluster of open land, schools and the surviving palace building, remnants of the former castle grounds.
The river curves around the north and east of the centre in gentle bends, and cherry trees and paths line its banks.
