Kerava lies north of Helsinki in Uusimaa, on the main railway line heading north from the capital. It covers a remarkably small area for a Finnish town, so the map is compact: a centre built close to the railway station, residential districts all around and forest and fields close at hand.
The Kerava River winds through the town from north to south, with green strips along its banks. The railway runs roughly parallel to it, and these two lines, one straight and one meandering, give the map its basic structure.
