Khovd lies on open steppe in far western Mongolia, where the Buyant River comes down from the mountains and spreads into a line of channels and trees. From above, the town is a loose grid of wide streets and fenced plots. Its edges fade gradually into bare ground and do not end at a clear boundary.
The town began as a Qing-era garrison and trading post in the eighteenth century. The outline of the old walled fortress, known locally as Sangiin Kherem, can still be traced on the northern side. Today Khovd is the administrative centre of its province and a university town, serving a region settled by several distinct ethnic groups.
A Khovd map poster shows the difference between the dense lines of the town and the empty country around it. The river corridor forms a soft dark band, roads run out toward the mountains in long straight strokes, and the space between them gives the print a spare, quiet composition.
The river runs past the town in several braided channels lined with trees and gardens. On the map it becomes a narrow, textured strip crossing otherwise open steppe.
The walled Qing garrison left a square footprint that still sits within the northern part of town. It is a rare geometric trace of the eighteenth century in the street plan.
Wide streets divide the town into large fenced plots that mix houses and yurts. From above, this reads as an even pattern of blocks that thins out toward the edges.

Ko e ha Khovd
Khovd tends to matter to people who have spent real time there, whether for study, fieldwork or family, or on the long overland route through the Altai. A plain map of its streets and river keeps that distance and that sense of place on a wall at home.
The poster can carry your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, such as a date or a name. It comes in five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Choose digital HD files for $9 or a printed poster on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
