Kodungallūr lies in Thrissur district in central Kerala, on low ground between the Arabian Sea and a maze of backwaters near the mouth of the Periyar river. From above, the landscape is a mix of water and land: channels and lagoons wind through the area, roads follow the drier ground, and houses sit among coconut palms rather than in dense blocks.
The area is widely identified with Muziris, the ancient port that traded pepper and spices with Rome and the Middle East. The town is also home to the Cheraman Juma Masjid, often described as the oldest mosque in India, and the Bhagavathy temple known for its Bharani festival. The Muziris Heritage Project now links many historic sites nearby.
A Kodungallūr map poster brings out the watery character of this coast. Backwater channels and lagoons appear as broad, flowing shapes, while the roads create a fine, organic network between them. It is an elegant piece for anyone who knows the region, or who is drawn to one of the oldest trading places on India's west coast.
Lagoons and waterways weave around the town, giving the map broad, organic shapes that contrast with the thin lines of the road network.
To the south, the Periyar meets the sea between Azhikode and Munambam, a meeting of river, backwater and coast that forms the most dramatic edge of the composition.
Historic landmarks, including the Cheraman Juma Masjid and the Bhagavathy temple, sit within the road network, connected by the heritage trail of the Muziris project.
