Kragujevac lies in the rolling hills of Šumadija, in the heart of Serbia. The Lepenica river runs through the city, and much of the street network follows its valley. The centre sits on the flatter ground, and residential districts climb the slopes around it. From above, the city looks like a cluster of neighbourhoods fitted between low hills.
In the early nineteenth century Kragujevac was the first capital of the modern Serbian state. It was home to some of the country's earliest institutions, including its first theatre. It later became an industrial centre and the home of the Zastava works. Šumarice memorial park, on the edge of the city, honours the victims of the 1941 massacre and forms a large green area on the map.
A Kragujevac map poster shows a city shaped equally by landscape and history: the river valley, the old centre, the broad industrial sites and the memorial park. It is a meaningful print for people from the city, for graduates of its university and for anyone connected to its story.
The river runs through the city. The central streets follow its course, and beyond them the street pattern rises into the surrounding hills.
A large memorial park on the edge of the city marks the 1941 massacre. On the map it appears as an extensive green area crossed by paths.
The compact old core, once the seat of the first modern Serbian state, lies on level ground by the river. It contrasts with the denser housing blocks beyond.
