Mitrovicë grew where the Sitnica joins the Ibar in northern Kosovo, and from above the rivers decide almost everything. The Ibar runs through the city and splits it into a northern and a southern part, while the Sitnica comes in from the south to meet it. The streets on each bank form their own networks, and the bridges are the few points where they connect.
The main bridge over the Ibar is well known far beyond the city, because for years it marked the line between the two communities living on either side. The city also has a long mining history. It's closely tied to the Trepča mining complex, which for decades was one of the largest industrial employers in the region.
