Krymsk lies in the southwest of Krasnodar Krai in southern Russia, on the Adagum river, between the Kuban lowlands and the first hills of the western Caucasus. The map reflects that in-between position. The streets spread across level ground in a mostly regular grid, wooded hills rise to the south, and the land opens into fields to the north.
The Adagum and its tributaries cross the town, and their courses shape several neighbourhoods. In July 2012 these rivers flooded after extreme rainfall, a disaster that claimed many lives. The railway and main roads toward Novorossiysk and the Black Sea coast pass through, making Krymsk a regional junction.
The surrounding area is agricultural, with the orchards, vineyards and vegetable farms typical of the Kuban. A Krymsk map poster shows the town's clear grid, the rivers running through it and the approaching hills. There is enough space around the town that its position between plain and mountains stays easy to read.
The river and its tributaries wind through the town, adding soft curves to the regular street pattern. On paper they form the most organic lines on the sheet.
Most of the town is laid out in straight streets and even blocks, as in many settlements of the Kuban. The pattern gives the poster a calm, orderly structure.
The railway and main roads toward Novorossiysk cross the map in long lines. They connect the town to the Black Sea coast and give the composition direction.
