Lake Ritsa lies high in the western Caucasus, in the region of Abkhazia, in a deep valley surrounded by forested slopes and peaks. It is small and slightly elongated, set at roughly 950 metres above sea level. A single mountain road leads to it through a gorge, and the lake is otherwise enclosed by high ground.
The lake is known for its clear water, which changes colour with the seasons, and for the surrounding forests of fir and beech. A dacha built for Stalin stands near its shore and has long drawn visitors. The Lashipse and Yupshara rivers are among the streams that feed it.
