Ko e mape
Pyatigorsk takes its name from Beshtau, the five-peaked mountain that stands to the north, but the hill that shapes the city itself is Mashuk. The streets wrap around its southern and western slopes, and the Podkumok River runs along the southern side. On a map, the mountain appears as a large, mostly open space that the whole city bends around.
Since the nineteenth century Pyatigorsk has been a resort of the Caucasian Mineral Waters, and its centre is organised around parks, springs and promenades rather than grand squares. Landmarks such as the Aeolian Harp pavilion and the Proval cave lake sit on Mashuk's slopes, linked to the lower town by winding paths, while the city's tram lines run along the main streets below.
The poet Mikhail Lermontov lived here and died in a duel at the foot of Mashuk in 1841, and his name is attached to many places in the city. A Pyatigorsk map poster shows the resort centre, the newer residential districts spreading toward the plain, and the mountain holding the middle of it all.
The mountain forms a broad, largely unbuilt shape at the edge of the centre, with roads and paths circling it, giving the whole layout its curved orientation.
Green spaces and promenades around the historic springs appear as soft, open areas threaded with footpaths, distinct from the regular blocks of the lower town.
The river winds along the southern side of the city, marking the lower boundary of the centre and separating it from the districts that lie beyond the water.

Ko e ha Pyatigorsk
Pyatigorsk means something to generations of visitors who came to take the waters, and to readers who know it from Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time. Its shape around the mountain makes it one of the most recognisable spa towns in the region.
