Kumi lies on the gently rolling plains of eastern Uganda, in the Teso sub-region. From above the town is small and open, with a handful of main roads meeting at its centre and a looser pattern of lanes and homesteads spreading into the surrounding farmland.
The landscape around Kumi is shaped by the wetlands and swampy lakes of the Kyoga basin to the west and north, and by granite outcrops that rise from the plains. Roads connect the town with Soroti, Mbale and the villages of the district, and they give the map its main structure.
