Kurtalan lies in Siirt Province in southeastern Turkey, in a landscape of low hills, farmland and river valleys. On a map it is a compact town, with a centre of closely packed streets and newer blocks spreading outward along the main roads. Around it, the network quickly thins to rural routes connecting villages.
The town is best known across Turkey as the eastern terminus of a railway line, and the long-distance train that runs there, the Kurtalan Express, carries its name. The station and track give the map a distinct straight line entering from the west and stopping at the town.
