Lamphun lies in northern Thailand, a short distance south of Chiang Mai, beside the Kuang River. Its map has a clear centre: the old town, enclosed by a moat and the remains of its walls. The shape is an elongated rectangle with rounded edges, and the river runs along its eastern side. Newer streets spread outward from it across the flat valley floor.
Lamphun is one of the oldest towns in Thailand. It was the capital of the Mon kingdom of Hariphunchai, which by tradition was founded in the seventh century under Queen Chamadevi. At the heart of the old town stands Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, with its golden chedi, one of the most important temples in the north.
A Lamphun map poster shows the old enclosed town at the centre, the moat drawing a strong outline, and the river and roads leading away through farmland and orchards. The area is known for longan growing. In black and white the moat and river frame the drawing well, giving an ancient town a clean modern form.
A moat encloses the old town in an elongated shape, forming the clearest outline on the poster and marking the ancient boundary.
The great temple occupies a prominent site within the old town, one of the most revered religious places in northern Thailand.
The river flows along the eastern edge of the old town, forming a natural boundary that the moat and later streets respect.
