Lempäälä lies just south of Tampere in Pirkanmaa, in a landscape shaped by water. Lakes make up much of the municipality, and on a map their long, irregular shorelines take up as much space as the built-up areas. The town centre sits where two lake systems come closest together.
The Lempäälä canal joins the lakes through the middle of town. It is a short, straight channel with a lock that lets boats pass between the waterways around Tampere and the lakes to the south. The railway and the main highway to Helsinki run close by, all three corridors packed into the same narrow strip of land.
