Lenoir sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge in western North Carolina. The land is uneven, so the street pattern is too. A compact downtown grid gives way to roads that curve along ridges and follow the creek valleys. Residential streets branch off in loops and dead ends, and the mountains rise to the north and west beyond the edge of the city.
Lenoir is the seat of Caldwell County. For much of the twentieth century it was one of the centres of the North Carolina furniture industry, with large factories in and around the town. The industry has declined, but its legacy remains in the town's buildings and identity.
