Lensk stands on the left bank of the Lena in western Sakha. From above, the river dominates everything. It is wide, slow and flecked with islands and sandbars, and the town lies along its bank in a long, narrow band. Streets run parallel to the water, crossed by shorter roads leading back toward the forest.
The town serves as a river port and supply base for the diamond-mining region around Mirny, so wharves and storage yards take up part of the waterfront. In 2001, an ice jam on the Lena caused a severe spring flood that inundated much of the town and led to large-scale rebuilding.
