Linares is in the south of Nuevo León, on the coastal plain that stretches east from the Sierra Madre Oriental. The mountains rise to the west, and the city has a regular grid layout centred on its main square and cathedral. On the map the streets form a steady pattern of square blocks that gradually loosens toward the outskirts.
The city was founded in the early 18th century and has long been a regional centre for agriculture and livestock. Across Mexico it is known above all for its glorias, soft caramel sweets made with goat's milk and nuts.
