Ko e mape
Liupanshui lies high on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau in western Guizhou, at around 1,800 metres. The surrounding karst landscape shapes the city strongly: the built-up area stretches along narrow valleys between steep limestone hills, and on the map the streets follow those valleys in long, curving lines, with green, unbuildable slopes pressing in on every side.
The city was established as a prefecture-level unit in 1978, and its name combines the first characters of three earlier counties: Liuzhi, Panxian and Shuicheng. It grew as a centre of coal mining and heavy industry. Thanks to its altitude, summers are cool, and the city promotes itself as China's cool capital.
To the west, the Beipan River runs through deep gorges, crossed on the border with Yunnan by one of the highest bridges in the world. A Liupanshui map poster shows a city defined by its terrain, where the density of streets varies with the shape of the land and the hills themselves form the largest shapes on the map.
The urban area extends along narrow valleys between limestone hills, giving Liupanshui an elongated, branching shape unlike cities built on open plains.
Steep, forested karst hills rise around the city and between its districts, appearing on the map as large open areas that frame the streets.
Main roads curve through the valleys to follow the terrain, tracing long, flowing lines that link the different parts of the city.
